Katy Downing in American La Ronde

When I stepped into the role of the wife in American La Ronde, I surprised myself with how much fun it can be to be flirty and sexy and breaking rules.

Just last night, Maryland Fox, the Artistic Director, told me, “You were so sexy.” I laughed, because I’ve always credited the actors I work alongside for bringing out those qualities in me. But the truth is, it was fun to fully embody that sensuality. The whole show pulsed with an exploration of intimacy that was sexy, and provocative and also sometimes mundane in the existence of living with another an and rekindling love.

American “La Ronde is a provocative and fully contemporary reimagining of Schnitzler’s notorious play Reigen (also known as La Ronde). At its heart is a simple silver bracelet that passes between ten bold and desperate lovers, offering glimpses into the intrigue, passion, and heartache left in its wake. Sexy, literate, emotional, and highly theatrical, the play dares us to question love, loyalty, and desire.”

For me, the real joy was in the collaboration. Being a company member at Pacific Resident Theater is a gift. Whether it’s a workshop, a co-op, or the main stage, I trust the actors around me. Many have become my closest friends and many I admire for their effortless talent.
